Keyword Research – Long Tail Keywords

How to Do Keyword Research for Search Engine Optimization

Good keyword research is an easy way to see what people are looking for if you have a good keyword research tool. Begin by typing search terms into Google auto suggest or you can use Jaaxy Keyword Tool’s alphabet soup automated feature. Click here to check out my Jaaxy review if you want more information. Start with keywords that are relevant to your business paying special attention to the monthly searches; it’s best if this number is high.

What you want to look for is topics that people are interested in so keywords that relate to concerns, interests, and problems are ones that you want to pay close attention to.

As I said before having a great keyword research tool makes all the difference. I have also had great success using Long Tail Pro when researching keywords. You can check out my Long Tail Pro review by clicking here.

The Best SEO Keyword Research Tool

Google Analytics

Google Analytics has an abundance of data about your audience, however, many don’t know where to look or how to interpret the data that is available.

First, sign in to your Google Analytics account, on the left-hand column click on Audience. There will be a drop-down menu with multiple headings. The main ones you need focus on are Demographics, Interests, Geo, and Mobile.

Google Analystics Audience Overview

Demographics – Age and gender details are provided. To be able to interpret what kind of content you need to create to target this audience you will need to do some research to determine their preferences. Places where you can start your research are Demographic Research or Market Research. This way you can create content that will resonate with them.

Google Analytics Demographics Overview

Interests – Contains Affinity category that is ad-focused, and In-Market Segment made for those looking for services and products to buy. There is an Other category for those who fall outside of Affinity and In-Market, however, their interests are shown online so you can still target them.

Google Analytics Interests Overview

Geography – Clearly this heading shows you where your audience is located which is relevant due to language and culture differences. Be sure to communicate clearly to all of your visitors.

Google Analytics GeographyMobile – This is extremely important. Be sure that your website is mobile friendly especially if this makes up a large part of your audience.

Forum Comments

An excellent way to find out what the audience you are targeting wants is from their comments. The comments that I am referring to are not just the comments on your website, they are the ones that are on forums and discussion boards within your niche. You can gather a wealth of information on the wants, needs, and unresolved problems of your audience. What you are looking for are those needs that you can offer a particular solution for.

Twitter hashtags are an especially easy place to see precise, targeted subjects that are being discussed. This makes it incredibly easy to pinpoint the pain points and create content that resolves whatever issue is being discussed.

Google Related Keywords

For those of you who do not know what Google related keywords are, they are the search terms and phrases that are located at the bottom of the SERPs page. This is a great place to grab long tail keywords for further research. If your research turns up keywords that have the necessary search volume and competition parameters then you can create your content on that term. If you are not familiar with the optimum competition and search volume requirements click here for more information on how to do keyword research effectively.

Google+ Pages

We all know social media platforms are filled with people expressing their frustrations and views. So, what better place is there to get some insight on content, problems, and resolutions? Google+ and Facebook are a bit more in-depth when it comes to personal expression because they don’t move as fast as other platforms such as Twitter. Because of this, they are great forums to help you target your audience perfectly.

  1. Hallo there Shwana,

I have to say that this post has really come in handy for me. I have learnt so much that I was ignorant of that got me poorly ranked with every post.

I have been writing about topics off of the top of my head and I have to say it has been very hectic. I am just a beginner and I am happy I have learnt something new that will ease most of the work.

    1. Hey Dave, I am glad that this post came right on time for you. I wouldn’t say that you are ignorant, this is just a learning process. Don’t be so hard on yourself.

You will find that you learn at least one new thing everyday in this space. If you have any questions along the way please don’t hesitate to ask. I wish you all the best success!

  2. Hi,
Thank you for sharing. Great article.
I’ve read all the points you’ve listed in your post. But I still have an issue and don’t know if you can answer my question.
Why I can’t see the gender and the age of my audience on Google analytics? Do you think I made something wrong? Unfortunately, they tell me that there are no data available. But I already have some readers on my site. What does it depend on?
