How to Promote My Business with Social Media Better Using These Strategies         how to promote my business with social media

Today, for your business to be successful, no matter what the industry, one thing is for certain; social media is a must. If you are not using social media to promote your business, you will be behind the curve. Knowing this I set out to find ways on how to promote my business with social media effectively.

Believe me, your competition is most likely using at least 1 social media platform for their business. So, in this article, I will be showing you how to promote your business with social media.

Keep in mind that all social media platforms are not created equal. Where one might work well for promoting your industry, another may not. This is something that you will have to find out on your own through trial and error.

So, without further ado, I’ll jump right into my take on how to promote my business with social media.

What is Social Media?

I am not going to assume that everyone knows what social media is. There are those that are still new to and very uncomfortable with the internet.

Social media is defined as applications, websites, and platforms that allow users to create and share content. In business when social media is integrated into a marketing strategy, it is referred to as social networking. Making connections to consumers and other businesses within your industry through online channels such as Facebook and Twitter are essential to be successful. Additionally, social networking makes is easy to reach millions of consumers worldwide within seconds.

Create Social Media Accounts/Sign Up                                                                         Facebook sign up screen

To get started with your social media marketing, first, you need to sign up or create your account(s).

I would recommend signing up with Facebook as it is a great platform to promote many types of businesses. You can sign up for a personal platform as well as a business page. If you have multiple businesses or websites, you should make a separate business page for each one.

I also recommend signing up for Twitter and Google+. If you don’t sign up for any others do sign up for these.

There are many other social media platforms out there that will benefit you and drive traffic to your website. For example, if you have a blog or website, you may want to sign up for platforms like Quora, StumbleUpon, BlogVilliage, or Tumblr.

Post Updates

People are always looking for fresh content. Before you start inviting friends and followers to your page, be sure to post updated content so that when your invitations are received people want to accept your request.

It is a regular practice for people to view your profile and pages before they accept your request. Would you want to accept a friend request to someone who had nothing of value to say? I know I wouldn’t.                                                                                                               man being followed by ducks

Build Followers and Friends

Building your friends and followers is one of my favorite things to do when on social media. That is the purpose of being on a social media platform; to connect with others.

On Google+ and Twitter, you can search by keyword to find followers. You can also search by business name or industry. You can also browse the entire network without any type of filter. However, if you want to have followers that share your interests or are interested in the product or service that your business represents you may want to use the keyword search method.

I suggest beginning your follower list with friends and family members.

Engage with Friends and Followers                                                                                       your brand engaging with followers on social media platforms

When your friend requests are accepted you want to reach out and thank the new contact for accepting your friend request. This is a great way to build relationships with your new friends and followers.

When you first accept friend requests, exchange ideas and thoughts that have nothing to do with promoting your business. Do the same when your friend requests get accepted.

When on Twitter reply to all messages, start conversations, and retweet articles. All the above build trust and great relationships. These are relationships with people all over the world! How awesome is that?

On Facebook make sure you never forget a birthday. Be sure to comment on all posts and be sure to share others’ links. Again, be sure to do more than just promoting your business.

Google+ has a very helpful option that you need to be sure to take advantage of. You have the option to separate your followers into different circles so that you can target them for different reasons.

There are many more social media options, however, Facebook, Twitter, and Google+ are the largest and most popular platforms.

Set Up Alerts on Your Mobile                                                                                                                   cell phone alerts for social media

To ensure that you are responsive to your followers immediately be sure to download all apps that you have a membership with to your mobile. This makes sure that you know right away when your followers are sharing and gives you the opportunity to respond immediately.

Follow the 1/7 Rule

This is a very easy rule to follow. Make sure that only 1 in 7 of your posts promotes your business. You don’t want to come off as a spammer. Or worse, as someone who is only concerned with what you have to say.

Be sure to post helpful tips, ideas, or say something funny or entertaining. You will have people looking forward to and commenting on your posts.

My Final Thoughts                                                                                                                          social media thumbprint

So, that about sums up how to promote my business with social media. This list is by no means all-inclusive, however, the tips I discussed above are all things that you want to make sure that you are doing for your business to benefit from social media.

Social media marketing is not something that you will see the results from overnight. However, if you keep at it you will definitely see increased web traffic as well as a loyal audience.

If you have any other questions or comments or have something that you would like to add please do so. I will get back to you ASAP.

  1. Well I must say I’ve kind of been following the 1 in 7 rule in reverse, where there would be about 6 promotional posts to one non-promotional post. I’ve thought about that and realise I should mix things up better, so something to work on there.

To me social media can be good and bad. From a business perspective, it can be great if you can really connect with an audience. But social media can also be a major distraction and time waster.

    Interesting post.

    1. Hello Darren!

When I first started with all my social media platforms I was just dropping my links as well. I hardly ever posted anything else. Its has been a conscious decision for me to post anything other than my links. The thing is I realized that no one cares about our links if they have no other interaction with us at all. We do have to connect with our audience if we want them to even care about what we are promoting.

I agree that you can get distracted within your social media platforms, however, this is where our focus comes in. We have to set time limits and specific things that we want to achieve within that time frame and stick to it. You can perfect this, all it takes is practice.

Thank you for taking the time to read my article and leave a comment. If you have any questions please feel free to ask.
