Top 5 Search Engine Optimization Strategies

For those of you who don’t know, search engine optimization is also known as SEO.  According to Search Engine Land, “SEO stands for “search engine optimization.” It is the process of getting traffic from the “free,” “organic,” “editorial” or “natural” search results on search engines.”  For your website to be successful you need to incorporate SEO techniques to drive your rankings to the top. Below I will review what I believe to be the top 5 search engine optimization strategies that you can use to get your page ranked on page one of the search engines

Search engine optimization incorporates creative and technical features to improve rankings in the search engines and drive traffic to your domain or website.

Your website needs to be structured in a way that search engines can understand; that is where the search engine optimization of your website comes in.

Understand Your Niche/Audience

Understanding your audience is the first step towards success in your chosen niche. If you don’t understand what your audience wants or needs, you will have a hard time providing a resolution to their problems which is usually why they are online in the first place. They are looking for a solution to a problem.

Optimize Your Site for Google RankBrain                                                                                  Google logo with head picture behind

Getting your website or domain optimized for Google Rankbrain is essential for ranking as this is the third-most important search ranking factor for web pages, right along with content and links.

Google Rankbrain is a machine-learning artificial intelligence system that helps process Google’s search results. Rankbrain is a part of Google’s search algorithm Hummingbird and does not handle all its searches.

Optimizing your site for RankBrain is difficult but it isn’t impossible. A few things you can do are:

  • Create enticing snippets – Improving organic click-through rates are key to success. Meta descriptions and page titles need to consist of user needs. Make sure they stand out in the search results.
  • Mirror Authoritative Websites – Try modeling your site and its contents after domains that are recognized as trustworthy by Google.
  • Write Conversationally – Provide a better user experience, write with people, not computers in mind. Your content needs to sound natural and human.
  • Create Posts With Targeted Keywords as Well as Their Variations – When writing a post ensure that you are targeting your keywords and well as other variations and related keywords.

Master Keyword Research

Mastering keyword research is essential to your online marketing success. A keyword is a phrase or a word that people search for in search engines; Google, Bing, and Yahoo.

Every post that you make should target a keyword. That means if you choose your keyword correctly, you have a chance to rank in the search engines for each keyword which leads to getting traffic to your website.

Since keywords are a vital part of your success, you need to have a powerful keyword research tool. I recommend Jaaxy keyword and research tool, you can check out my Jaaxy review by clicking here.

There are a couple of items in the keyword research tool that are imperative to be able to rank, they are as follows:

  • Average searches per month should be over 100
  • SEO should be as close to 100 as possible. This number is on a scale from 1-100.
  • QSR under 100 – This is the number of websites competing for the specific keyword, the lower the number the better.

Another thing that you should be doing is checking to see what keywords your competition is using. You can do this at SpyFu.

Content – Invaluable/Engaging Content

The most important part of your website is the content; without great content, you can hang up any kind of success that you are striving for. Content is king!

The content of any post or article needs to be valuable to your audience. There are key elements that need to be satisfied with your content, they are as follow:                                                                                                                                                                                  Create Engaging Content

  • Answer a question
  • Be relevant
  • Solve a problem

Internal/External Linking

Internal Linking

Internal linking is a very important factor for the rank of your site; however, it is one that is overlooked. When I first started my blog, I was not even aware of what internal linking was or how important it is.

Internal links are links that go from one page to another on the same website or domain. There are a couple of different benefits to internal linking; allow navigation of the website, establish information hierarchy, and spreads ranking power around the given website.

External Linking to Sites with High Domain Authority

Link chain

External links are links that link out to another website or domain. You want to make sure that the domain that you are linking to has high domain authority. This will lend more credibility to your website or domain.

  1. I’ve done affiliate marketing for the past 2 years. Basically, I’ve followed almost everything on your article, except external linking. I don’t go chasing for backlinks and focus on good on-page SEO strategies. I find that I’m getting good results on some of the pages. I’m planning on exploring backlinking this year. Do you have any useful tips to get high quality backlinks easily?

  2. thanks for the article Shwana

Can I ask a related question?
Is there any connection between google ads and search results.
Here is the reason why I ask the question.
When I search the competition on some of my targeted keywords I often see that the best ranks sites do not have google ads.

    1. Hello Remy. I have also noticed that on search analysis the sites that hold the top positions all say “no” to Adsense. Having ads on your site does not affect your rankings unless you have too many of them. Also have a lot of ads above the fold is not recommended.

Too many ads makes it so that your reader has to fight through your ads to read your content. Also, you don’t want too many flashy ads as you don’t want your visitors to get distracted by them or click on them and leave your site.

I hope that answers your question. If you have any more please ask. Thanks for visiting!

  3. Hi. Thanks for the great article. I am embarrassed to admit that this is the first time I’ve heard about RankBrain.
Thanks for bringing that to my attention. I’ll have to add that to my bag of tricks. 🙂 It seems like the more I learn about SEO, quality content that engages readers is really where we should be focusing. Would you agree? Thanks.

    1. Hello Vic. I am glad that you learned something new. Don’t feel embarrassed about not knowing about RankBrain. I didn’t know about it until I read about it either. I am glad to educate whenever I can.

I do agree that publishing quality content highly important, and yes, it does need to be priority. Our readers need to be engaged with our content in order for it to be effective and helpful. Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment.  Best wishes.

  4. This was a very informative piece. I am fairly new to online marketing, been doing it for a few months. You really touched on a lot of great stuff, I do make sure that I am getting the best Keyword I can find, a lot of them are closer to 95 so my articles can get ranked in Google. The links I have not been doing as much as I should and I need to correct that. My question is, why would I want to have an external link? Isn’t the idea to keep peoples eyeballs on your site so they don’t leave your page?

    1. Hello. Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment. I am glad that you liked the post. What keyword research tool are you using? There is more to good keyword research than just one metric, check out my article about how to do keyword research effectively

To answer your question, external links are important because it is linking your site to ones that have more authority than yours. This gives your website more credibility. Yes, you want to keep people on your site so when you link to the other website make sure you are setting it to open an additional tab so that they keep their place on your website.

Thank you for visiting and I wish you all the best success with your busines.
